What Is CIENA-CES-MPLS-MIB?

CIENA-CES-MPLS-MIB is a Ciena vendor MIB managing MPLS and GMPLS label switched path (LSP) data on Carrier Ethernet Switching (CES) platforms, extending the standard MPLS traffic-engineering model with explicit-route hop tracking. It exposes actual-route hop tables for both MPLS and GMPLS tunnels, recording each hop's index, address type, IP address, unnumbered interface identifier, and LSP ID along the established path. Its monitoring value is chiefly software/protocol-path oriented, allowing an operator to verify the actual path an LSP took through the network versus its intended path, which is essential for troubleshooting suboptimal routing, verifying traffic-engineering constraints, and diagnosing LSP setup failures on a carrier Ethernet/MPLS network. It builds directly on the standard MPLS-TE and GMPLS-TE MIBs, extending their tunnel model with Ciena-specific actual-hop reporting. It's deployed in service-provider MPLS/GMPLS backbone or metro networks running Ciena CES switches where LSP path verification is a routine operational task. An engineer polls cienaMplsTunnelARHopListIndex and cienaMplsTunnelARHopIndex to enumerate the actual hop-by-hop path taken by a specific LSP, cross-referencing cienaMplsTunnelARHopIpAddr and cienaMplsTunnelARHopLspId against the intended explicit route. For GMPLS tunnels, the parallel cienaGmplsTunnelARHopIpAddr and cienaGmplsTunnelARHopLspId tables are used the same way to verify optical/TDM path setup. A mismatch between the actual hop list and the configured explicit route would indicate the LSP was signaled via an alternate path, possibly due to a link failure or constraint-based rerouting event upstream.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cienaCesMplsTunnelPathUseCount OID:

Select a Ciena Carrier Ethernet switch as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cienaCesMplsTunnelPathUseCount into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. Indicates the number of encap tunnels that are using this path. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
