This indicates whether this tunnel is currently the active (traffic-carrying) member of its protection pair or sitting in standby. This is the field to check to know, right now, which of a primary/backup pair is actually forwarding traffic — the ProtectionRole object tells you the design intent, but this one tells you the live state, and after a failover the two can legitimately disagree (a backup tunnel with role backup(2) can show state active(1)). Right after a link failure, tunnel 'BOS-DC-LSP-02' — normally standby — might flip to active(1) as it takes over traffic from its failed primary partner.
