What Is CIENA-TC?

CIENA-TC is a foundational textual-conventions module published by Ciena Corporation, a maker of optical transport and packet networking equipment, and it underlies the rest of Ciena's proprietary MIB suite. It does not define any managed objects, tables, or traps of its own; instead it declares shared data types (such as enumerated states, string formats, or index types) that other Ciena MIB modules import to ensure consistent representation of things like alarm severities, port states, or component identifiers. Because it carries no runtime instances, it is not something an operator would poll directly for hardware or software status -- its value is indirect, standardizing how status is represented elsewhere in Ciena's optical and packet platform MIBs. As a textual-conventions module it has no dependency on external MIBs beyond standard SNMPv2-TC/SNMPv2-SMI. It is deployed wherever any Ciena platform MIB (e.g., chassis, card, or optical-line MIBs) is loaded, since those modules import CIENA-TC to compile and to correctly render their monitored values. When a MIB compiler or NMS reports an import from the CIENA-TC MIB, that simply confirms the loading module depends on these shared type definitions rather than exposing any data of its own.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CIENA-TC. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Ciena 6500-D2 Packet-Optical Platform - high-capacity edge extension of Ciena's currently sold 6500 platform
  • Ciena Waveserver - modular DCI interconnect system with WaveLogic 6 Extreme, part of Ciena's current portfolio

Monitoring Examples

This module has no data-bearing objects of its own -- sample_objects is empty and it defines only textual conventions/type definitions consumed by other Ciena MIB modules. There is no realistic polling scenario to describe since nothing here is directly monitorable; an admin would instead see its type definitions manifest indirectly in the values reported by other Ciena MIBs (e.g., an alarm-severity enumeration or an equipment-state type).
