What Is CIENA-SMI?
CIENA-SMI defines the Structure of Management Information and enterprise OID tree root for Ciena Corporation, a maker of optical transport and packet-networking equipment (including the CES/Ciena Ethernet Services product lines referenced in its internal MIB version string). As an SMI module it contains no operational data objects itself; it establishes the naming hierarchy under which Ciena's product-specific MIB modules register their interface, environment, performance, configuration, and fault/trap objects. It is therefore not used to directly monitor uptime, temperature, CPU/memory load, power/fan health, or software version — those metrics live in the Ciena CES and related product MIBs that register under this tree. A CIENA-SMI reference is therefore consulted mainly to resolve the enterprise OID root rather than to poll any operational values directly, and every Ciena-specific MIB module structurally depends on this SMI root. It is loaded as a prerequisite file whenever an SNMP manager manages Ciena optical/packet transport equipment.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CIENA-SMI. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Ciena 6500 Packet-Optical Platform with WaveLogic 6 Extreme (2024) — coherent optics upgrade delivering up to 1.6 Tb/s per wavelength
Monitoring Examples
CIENA-SMI has no sample_objects; it only defines the top-level enterprise OID node(s) for Ciena, with no tables or scalars to poll directly. Real monitoring (e.g., of optical interfaces or chassis alarms) would be done through the specific Ciena CES product MIB that registers beneath this SMI tree.
