Because Ciena CES switches can run many GMPLS tunnels simultaneously, this index is what lets a trap receiver correlate the notification back to a specific tunnel entry rather than just 'a tunnel somewhere changed.' For example, a trap carrying index 42 tells the NMS to look up tunnel #42 in the tunnel table to see its current name and state before alerting the on-call engineer.
