What Is APEX-MIB?

APEX-MIB is a proprietary MIB from BigBand Networks for the APEX video/broadband gateway platform, a headend/edge device used in cable and DOCSIS video networks for processing and inserting conditional-access data into MPEG transport streams. It exposes configuration data covering device identity and boot behavior (product name, boot method, auto-reboot setting), EMM (Entitlement Management Message) insertion parameters for conditional-access PID mapping, and a save-config action object. Monitoring here spans both software-configuration and hardware-reboot status: apexBootReason reveals why the device last restarted, useful for catching unexpected crashes versus scheduled reboots, apexAutoRebootEnable and apexSaveConfig relate to configuration persistence and recovery behavior, and apexMaxServiceMappings indicates the device's current capacity utilization for service mappings. It is a standalone BigBand Networks proprietary MIB likely used alongside the related APEX9-MIB and other BigBand video-headend MIBs sharing the same enterprise OID branch. It is deployed at cable/MSO video headends running BigBand APEX gateways for digital video processing and conditional-access EMM insertion into broadcast transport streams. Engineers can download the APEX-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in APEX-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll apexBootReason after an unexpected outage to determine whether the APEX gateway rebooted due to a crash or a scheduled event, and check apexAutoRebootEnable to confirm the recovery policy is set as intended. Monitoring apexMcEmmInsertionMode alongside apexMcEmmInsertionPid1 and apexMcEmmInsertionPid2 (with their Enable flags) verifies conditional-access EMM insertion is correctly configured for the expected PIDs. apexMaxServiceMappings shows how close the device is to its configured service-mapping capacity, useful before provisioning additional services.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using apexRdsProgramMessagesReceived OID:

Select a BigBand Networks APEX video/broadband gateway (legacy) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type apexRdsProgramMessagesReceived into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. It reports the number of successful ServiceEncrypt messages received in the last 15 minutes. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
