What Is CODAN-MIB?

CODAN-MIB is a vendor-specific SNMP module for Codan's 8800 DMR (Digital Mobile Radio) series communications equipment, managing RF/microwave links under the "codan" enterprise OID branch. It exposes link-level configuration such as channel number, modulation type, transmit power setting, link capacity, forward error correction (FEC) settings, and link/route naming, alongside operational status and performance gauges for each configured link. Its dedicated status-and-gauges and performance object groups are explicitly aimed at monitoring radio hardware health -- transmitter/receiver mute state and FEC receive-correction activity reveal signal degradation or faults on a wireless backhaul link. The module also defines its own NOTIFICATION-TYPE traps for link/equipment events, and appears self-contained without heavy reliance on external standard MIBs. It is typically deployed in point-to-point or point-to-multipoint microwave/radio backhaul networks, such as utility, transportation, or public-safety communications infrastructure using Codan radios, where a CODAN-MIB download equips engineers to catch RF degradation before a backhaul link fails.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CODAN-MIB. Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll wvChannelNo and wvModulation to confirm a link's RF configuration matches the intended plan, and check wvTransmitterMute/wvReceiverMute to detect if a link has been inadvertently muted, explaining a sudden loss of throughput. wvFecEnabled and wvFecReceiveCorrection together indicate whether forward error correction is active and how much correction is being applied -- a rising correction rate signals a degrading RF path before it fails outright. wvLinkCapacity combined with wvPerformance data lets an engineer confirm actual throughput is tracking the link's provisioned capacity.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using wvlinkNoOfReceivedKBits OID:

Select a Codan 8800 DMR microwave radio link equipment as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type wvlinkNoOfReceivedKBits into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. Specifies the total number of kilobits received by the Link interface. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline (in Kilobits), since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
