What Is CIENA-WS-NOTIFICATION-MIB?
CIENA-WS-NOTIFICATION-MIB defines the SNMP trap/notification set for Ciena's WaveServer optical transport platform, delivering the same alarm and link-state fault data modeled in CIENA-WS-ALARM-MIB as asynchronous notifications. It covers alarm notifications carrying severity, description, entity type, and active status, plus dedicated link-state defect notifications. This is a fault-monitoring module rather than a polled-counter one: it lets an NMS receive real-time alerts about hardware or optical-signal faults (e.g., a line port defect) instead of waiting for a poll cycle, which matters for optical transport where fast fault detection affects service restoration times. It is closely tied to CIENA-WS-ALARM-MIB (shares the same alarm attributes) and to CIENA-WS-PTP-MIB (physical termination point states referenced by the link-state notifications). It is deployed in carrier and enterprise DWDM/coherent optical transport networks using Ciena WaveServer chassis. Engineers can download the CIENA-WS-NOTIFICATION-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CIENA-WS-NOTIFICATION-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. A trap receiver would capture a wsAlarmNotification carrying wsAlarmNotificationSeverity, wsAlarmNotificationDescription, and wsAlarmNotificationActiveStatus for a given wsAlarmNotificationInstanceId, or a wsLinkStateAlarmNotification tied to wsLinkStateAlarmNotificationSiteId. Receiving a high-severity alarm notification with active status "true" for a specific site/group/member would indicate an in-progress fault—for example a loss-of-signal condition on an optical line port—needing immediate operator response.
