What Is CTRON-APPN-MIB?

CTRON-APPN-MIB is a Cabletron Networks MIB for managing IBM APPN (Advanced Peer-to-Peer Networking) functionality on Cabletron routing devices, covering node configuration, topology database, and session/route setup. It exposes system-level APPN configuration objects such as node type, control-point alias, mode-to-COS mapping, directory cache size/entries, and locate/registration parameters (nwAppnSysRouterId, nwAppnSysNodeType, nwAppnSysCpAlias, nwAppnSysDirCacheSize, nwAppnSysMaxDirEntries, nwAppnSysLocateTimeout). Its monitoring value centers on the operational state and capacity of the APPN software subsystem - whether directory caches and locate queues are sized adequately, whether registration with the network is functioning, and other APPN protocol-level health indicators - rather than physical hardware. It is tied to IBM's SNA/APPN architecture standards rather than an IETF MIB, so it depends conceptually on APPN protocol definitions rather than another SNMP MIB module. It is deployed on legacy Cabletron/Enterasys routers, where CTRON-APPN-MIB SNMP monitoring supports IBM SNA/APPN network environments used for mainframe connectivity.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CTRON-APPN-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Monitoring Examples

An admin would poll nwAppnSysNodeType and nwAppnSysCpAlias to confirm the router's configured APPN role and control-point identity, and nwAppnSysMaxLocates alongside nwAppnSysLocateTimeout to see if locate requests are timing out due to an overloaded directory service. nwAppnSysDirCacheSize and nwAppnSysMaxDirEntries would be checked against actual directory usage to catch a cache nearing capacity, which can cause session-setup failures. nwAppnRouter and nwAppnComponents group related router/component configuration under the APPN subsystem.
