A rising count signals that frames arriving on that link are being rejected at the data-link layer, which can point to cabling, framing, or peer-configuration trouble on the APPN connection. For example, if a technician notices this counter climbing steadily on a branch-office APPN link, they would suspect a mismatched line configuration between the two Cabletron routers terminating that link.
