What Is CISCO-RTTMON-MIB?

CISCO-RTTMON-MIB (Cisco IP SLA, formerly Service Assurance Agent) defines objects for configuring and monitoring round-trip time probes across a variety of protocols including ICMP echo, HTTP, FTP, and jitter (voice-quality) measurements from Cisco devices. It exposes application-level identity and capability information, supported RTT (round-trip time) types and protocols, and control objects for administering and resetting probe operations. Its core monitoring value is software/service-level performance rather than hardware sensors: it lets an operator actively measure network path latency, jitter, and reachability to remote targets, functioning as an active-testing complement to passive interface counters. It builds on this module's own control/application hierarchy and works alongside CISCO-RTTMON-TC-MIB for shared textual conventions and type definitions. It is widely deployed on Cisco routers and switches to provide active performance monitoring (IP SLA) for VoIP, WAN, and application-path health checks. Documentation and vendor tooling commonly abbreviate this module as cisco-rttmon-mib when referencing its IP SLA probe configuration and control objects.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-RTTMON-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Monitoring Examples

An operator would check rttMonApplSupportedRttTypesTable/rttMonApplSupportedRttTypesEntry to confirm which probe types (ICMP, HTTP, jitter, etc.) a given device supports before configuring a probe. Polling rttMonApplNumCtrlAdminEntry and rttMonApplTimeOfLastSet reveals how many RTT operations are configured and when they were last modified, useful for auditing active SLA probes. A rising jitter or round-trip time reported by a configured probe (via the broader RTT results tables built on rttMonCtrl) would reveal a degrading WAN or VoIP path before users notice call quality issues; rttMonApplReset or rttMonApplPreConfigedReset could be used to clear and restart probe state during troubleshooting.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using rttMonStatsCollectDrops OID:

Select a Cisco Catalyst 9300 series switch as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type rttMonStatsCollectDrops into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports the number of times an RTT (IP SLA) operation could not be initiated because a necessary internal resource, such as memory, wasn't available. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an Integer32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases between polls, since dropped RTT operations mean your synthetic monitoring probes aren't reliably running. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
