What Is CISCO-RTTMON-RTP-MIB?

CISCO-RTTMON-RTP-MIB is an extension to the CISCO-RTTMON-MIB (Cisco IP SLA) that adds support for RTP-based operations, letting a Cisco router measure real-time voice-path quality by establishing an RTP stream (per RFC 1889/3550) between two routers. It belongs to the IP SLA / voice quality assurance technology area and exposes performance-counter data rather than hardware status: round-trip time, jitter, packet loss/lateness/earliness, out-of-sequence packets, frame loss, and computed voice-quality scores. Its monitoring role is entirely about software-measured network performance affecting voice/VoIP quality, most notably the Mean Opinion Score (MOS) metrics for conversational and listening quality and the R-factor, which quantify perceived call quality end to end. It explicitly depends on the base CISCO-RTTMON-MIB for its operation/control framework and references the RTP protocol standard for the underlying stream format. It is typically deployed on Cisco routers acting as IP SLA source and responder endpoints in enterprise or service-provider voice/UC networks to proactively detect degraded call quality. Engineers can download the CISCO-RTTMON-RTP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

An administrator would poll rttMonLatestRtpOperTable entries for rttMonLatestRtpOperRTT and rttMonLatestRtpOperIAJitterDS to detect rising round-trip latency or jitter on a WAN voice path, and cross-check rttMonLatestRtpOperPacketLossDS and rttMonLatestRtpOperPacketOOSDS for packet loss or reordering. If rttMonLatestRtpOperMOSCQDS or rttMonLatestRtpOperMOSLQDS scores drop below an acceptable threshold (e.g. under 3.5) while rttMonLatestRtpOperRFactorDS also declines, that is a clear signal that end users on that link are experiencing degraded call quality even before a help-desk ticket comes in.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using rttMonLatestRtpOperRTT OID:

Select a Cisco router (IP SLA source/responder) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type rttMonLatestRtpOperRTT into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports the round trip time for RTP packet. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Gauge32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value drifts significantly from its normal baseline, since an unexpected change often points to a real underlying issue. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
