What Is CONFIG-MIB?
CONFIG-MIB is a generic, vendor-unspecified SNMP module (the name is reused across multiple vendors' agent implementations) whose purpose is to expose device configuration management operations rather than a particular hardware technology area. Because the CONFIG-MIB MIB name is reused by multiple vendors, its exact object set can vary significantly between implementations. It generally offers objects that let a management station trigger or observe configuration-related actions, such as saving a running configuration to a startup configuration or reloading a saved configuration. In terms of hardware/software status monitoring, its relevance is mainly to configuration state: whether the running and startup configurations are in sync, whether a save/restore operation is in progress, and when the configuration was last changed. It typically stands alone with no strong dependency on other MIBs beyond the base SNMPv2-SMI/SNMPv2-CONF conventions, since configuration management is usually vendor-specific. It is deployed on network devices (switches, routers, or other managed appliances) where administrators want to verify or automate configuration backup/restore via SNMP rather than a CLI or web UI.
