Category: Network Monitoring (RMON), Vendor: Ciena
Description: Provides benchmarking and performance measurement objects for Ciena CES Carrier Ethernet switches.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CIENA-CES-BENCHMARK-MIB?
CIENA-CES-BENCHMARK-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB from Ciena for its Carrier Ethernet Solutions (CES) platforms that manages RFC 2544 and ITU-T Y.1564 service-benchmark testing, confirming the hint's description of it as a performance/benchmarking module. It exposes test configuration through cienaCesBenchmarkProfileTable and cienaCesBenchmarkEntityTable, EMIX traffic-mix definitions via cienaCesBenchmarkEmixFrameSizeTable/cienaCesBenchmarkEmixSequenceTable, and live/historical results through cienaCesBenchmarkGenTestSessionThroughputResultsTable, cienaCesBenchmarkGenTestSessionFramelossResultsTable, cienaCesBenchmarkGenTestSessionLatencyResultsTable, and cienaCesBenchmarkGenTestSessionPdvResultsTable, tracked per cienaCesBenchmarkTestInstanceTable/cienaCesBenchmarkTestInstanceStatsTable. It depends on CIENA-SMI (cienaCesConfig, cienaCesStatistics) and CIENA-GLOBAL-MIB for common severity and MAC-address types, and it fires notifications such as cienaCesBenchmarkTestStarted/Stopped/Completed and KPI-failure traps (cienaCesBenchmarkTestFailedThroughputKpi, cienaCesBenchmarkTestFailedFramelossKpi, cienaCesBenchmarkTestFailedLatencyKpi, cienaCesBenchmarkTestFailedPdvKpi) when a benchmark run fails its target metrics. It is deployed on Ciena CES Carrier Ethernet switches used for service-turnup and SLA validation in carrier/metro Ethernet networks, and administrators can download the CIENA-CES-BENCHMARK-MIB file to load it into their MIB browser when automating service-acceptance testing.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CIENA-CES-BENCHMARK-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Ciena CES (Carrier Ethernet Solutions) switches
Monitoring Examples
An operator starts an RFC 2544 test via cienaCesBenchmarkTestInstanceTable and watches for a cienaCesBenchmarkTestCompleted notification, then reads cienaCesBenchmarkGenTestSessionThroughputResultsTable for the achieved rate; a cienaCesBenchmarkTestFailedThroughputKpi trap firing instead would indicate the circuit failed to sustain its committed information rate during the benchmark run.
What Can Be Monitored
- benchmark test profile/entity configuration
- EMIX traffic-mix frame-size distribution
- throughput/frame-loss/latency/PDV test results
- test instance run state and statistics
- test start/stop/completion notifications
- KPI-failure trap notifications

| I32 cienaCesBenchmarkTestInstanceEntryCurrentInterval | 1.3.6.1.4.1.1271.2.1.39.1.1.12.1.11 | Integer32 | read-only | Applicable to generator test instances, this indicates the number of intervals of the selected tests have been run, including the current one, in relation to the total number of intervals to complete. This is based on the profile's interval and duration configured. |
| I32 cienaCesBenchmarkTestInstanceEntryCvid | 1.3.6.1.4.1.1271.2.1.39.1.1.12.1.6 | Integer32 | read-create | C VLAN ID to use for testing. For generator test instances, this over-writes the value defined in the referenced test profile if applicable (encap-type set to dot1q or qinq). For reflector test instances, this has to be set to a valid c-vid accepted by the associated sub-port. A value of 0xFFFF indicates ANY c-vid, while a value of 0 indicates untagged (s-vid also has to be set to 0). |

For generator test instances, this over-writes the value defined in the referenced test profile if applicable (encap-type set to qinq). For reflector test instances, this has to be set to a valid s-vid accepted by the associated sub-port. A value of 0xFFFF indicates ANY s-vid. A value of 0 indicates untagged or single-tagged traffic. |
| I32 cienaCesBenchmarkTestInstanceEntryTotalIntervals | 1.3.6.1.4.1.1271.2.1.39.1.1.12.1.12 | Integer32 | read-only | Applicable to generator test instances, this indicates the total number of intervals of the selected tests to be run by a single start command on the test instance.
