Description: Manages Bidirectional Forwarding Detection (BFD) sessions on Ciena CES Carrier Ethernet switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CIENA-CES-BFD-MIB?

CIENA-CES-BFD-MIB is a Ciena vendor MIB implementing Bidirectional Forwarding Detection (BFD) session management for Carrier Ethernet Switching (CES) platforms, used to rapidly detect forwarding-path failures between adjacent network devices. It exposes BFD session identifiers, configurable transmit/receive interval profiles, detect multipliers, and session roles, allowing an operator to define and monitor fast failure-detection timers independent of the routing protocols that use them. Its monitoring value is primarily software/protocol-state oriented, confirming whether BFD sessions use the correct timer profile and detect multiplier so link or forwarding failures are caught within the expected sub-second to few-second window, which underpins fast reroute and high-availability behavior on the switch. It complements standard BFD (RFC 5880) and is typically used alongside MPLS or routing-protocol MIBs that reference BFD sessions for liveness detection. It's deployed in carrier and service-provider Ethernet networks running Ciena CES switches where sub-second fault detection is required for SLA-sensitive services. Engineers can download the CIENA-CES-BFD-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CIENA-CES-BFD-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Ciena CES Carrier Ethernet switch

Monitoring Examples

An operator inspects BFD profile settings, cienaCesBfdTransmitInterval, cienaCesBfdReceiveInterval, and cienaCesBfdDetectMultiplier, to confirm a profile is tuned for the required failure-detection speed. cienaCesBfdSessionIndex and cienaCesBfdRole are checked to confirm a specific BFD session is active and correctly configured as active or passive. cienaCesBfdUseCount reveals how many higher-layer sessions, such as MPLS LSPs referenced via cienaCesBfdLspGachType, depend on a given profile, which matters when planning a profile change that could affect multiple protected paths.

What Can Be Monitored

  • BFD session status
  • transmit/receive interval profile
  • detect multiplier
  • BFD session role (active/passive)
  • profile usage count across sessions
