Category: Alarm and Event Management, Cisco Devices, Network Monitoring (RMON), SNMP Framework

Description: Declares SNMP agent capabilities for notification logging management on Cisco routing and switching platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-NOTIFICATION-LOG-CAPABILITY?

CISCO-NOTIFICATION-LOG-CAPABILITY is an AGENT-CAPABILITIES conformance module that declares how Cisco's SNMP agent implementation supports the standard IETF NOTIFICATION-LOG-MIB on Cisco routing and switching platforms. It defines no data objects of its own; instead it states which groups, objects, and variations of the standard NOTIFICATION-LOG-MIB (which itself logs SNMP notifications/traps for later retrieval) are supported, and with what limitations, on a given Cisco IOS/IOS-XE release. Because it is purely a conformance statement, it has no direct hardware or software status monitoring role; its function is to let NMS tools and MIB compilers determine whether/how notification logging can be relied upon on a specific Cisco device. Its dependency is explicit and total: it exists solely to describe conformance to NOTIFICATION-LOG-MIB (RFC 3014). It is typically consulted during NMS integration to confirm whether a Cisco device's agent supports trap logging before building alerting workflows around it, and network engineers often reference the CISCO-NOTIFICATION-LOG-CAPABILITY MIB directly when validating this conformance during MIB compilation.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-NOTIFICATION-LOG-CAPABILITY. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco IOS/IOS-XE router or switch

Monitoring Examples

This module contains no runtime-pollable data objects; it is an AGENT-CAPABILITIES statement used only to determine, for a given Cisco agent/software version, which parts of the standard NOTIFICATION-LOG-MIB (such as the notification log table or log configuration objects) are actually implemented. An engineer would consult it during MIB compilation or NMS onboarding rather than for live monitoring.
