Because generator and reflector roles behave completely differently elsewhere in this MIB -- generators run tests while reflectors are merely enabled -- this single field determines which half of a benchmark test pair a given port plays, and getting it wrong on both ends means traffic never loops back correctly. For example, setting the near-end entity to generator(3) and the far-end entity on a different chassis to reflector(2) is what sets up a round-trip loss and latency test between the two sites.
