What Is IEEE802dot11-MIB?

IEEE802dot11-MIB is the IEEE standards-based MIB for managing 802.11 wireless LAN entities (stations and access points), covering station configuration, authentication algorithms, WEP key management, privacy settings, antenna properties, power management, and MAC-layer statistics counters. It exposes wireless-specific configuration data (SSID, BSS type, power management mode) as well as protocol/security settings and performance counters relevant to 802.11 operation. For monitoring purposes it is used to check the software/protocol status of a wireless station — its configured desired SSID and BSS type, whether privacy (WEP) is enabled, and MAC-layer counters that reveal transmission errors or retries indicating RF or association problems — rather than physical hardware health like temperature or power. It is a foundational standard referenced by numerous vendor-specific wireless MIBs that extend it with proprietary radio and AP management objects. It is deployed on 802.11 wireless client stations, access points, and wireless bridges from any vendor implementing standard 802.11 SNMP management, making this IEEE802dot11-MIB reference a common starting point for interoperable wireless monitoring tools.
