All MIBs › INTERFACES-MIB

Category: IP and Core Protocols, Network Interfaces, Standard: IETF

Description: Defined by RFC 2863, this standard IETF MIB supplies the ifTable and associated objects used to manage network interfaces on any type of device.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is INTERFACES-MIB?

Despite its generic name, the object names available for this particular module point to a vendor-specific "management ports" table for auxiliary out-of-band management interfaces (including dial-up modem and serial console ports), organized under a company-specific device tree (txport/companyinfo/products) rather than the standard IETF ifTable. It exposes configuration data such as port descriptions, operating mode, dial strings, and modem initialization strings. It supports monitoring the hardware/software status of auxiliary management interfaces—specifically whether an internal or compressed-SLIP modem port is present, configured, and initializing correctly. No dependency on other standard MIBs is evident beyond the vendor's own device tree. It is typically deployed on networking equipment that has an auxiliary dial-up modem port used for out-of-band device access. Engineers can download the INTERFACES-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in INTERFACES-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • networking equipment with an auxiliary dial-up/management port (vendor-specific txport device tree)

Monitoring Examples

mgmtPortsTable/mgmtPortsTableEntry, indexed by mgmtPortsTableIndex, exposes mgmtPortsDescription, mgmtPortsMode, and mgmtPortsElementID for each management port, while mgmtPortsPrimaryDialString/mgmtPortsSecondaryDialString and mgmtPortsExtInitString configure the dial-up parameters. An admin monitoring mgmtPortsInternalModem and mgmtPortsCompressedSlip can confirm whether the internal modem is present/enabled and whether compressed SLIP is negotiated, useful for diagnosing a failed out-of-band dial-in session.

What Can Be Monitored

  • management port description/mode
  • dial prefix and primary/secondary dial strings
  • modem initialization string
  • internal modem presence
  • compressed SLIP mode
