Category: IP Routing

Description: Manages IS-IS routing protocol adjacencies, LSP database, and metrics on Data Connection equipment.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is DC-ISIS-MIB?

DC-ISIS-MIB is a Data Connection Ltd. MIB module for managing the IS-IS (Intermediate System to Intermediate System) routing protocol implementation on equipment using Data Connection's routing stack, closely modeled on the IETF draft-ietf-isis-wg-mib-16 standard. It exposes IS-IS system-level objects (isisSystem, isisSysLevel) along with the broader isisObjects tree covering adjacencies, link-state database (LSP) entries, interface metrics, and areas, plus isisNotifications for IS-IS-related trap events. It is used to monitor the software/protocol status of the routing engine, tracking adjacency state changes (up/down), LSP database size and age, and level (L1/L2) configuration to detect routing instability, adjacency flaps, or database synchronization problems that would cause network reachability issues. As its module description states, it is closely based on a draft IETF IS-IS MIB standard, so it shares structure and semantics with the eventual RFC-standardized ISIS-MIB and depends conceptually on that standard for interpretation. It was deployed on routers and route servers using Data Connection's IS-IS protocol stack, commonly embedded by network equipment vendors licensing DC's routing software. Engineers can download the DC-ISIS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in DC-ISIS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • router or route server using Data Connection's IS-IS routing stack

Monitoring Examples

An operator can poll isisSysLevel under isisSystem to confirm whether a router is configured for Level 1, Level 2, or Level 1-2 IS-IS operation, and monitor isisNotifications for adjacency-down traps that signal a neighboring router has dropped out of the routing domain. Tracking LSP database size and age within isisObjects over time helps detect an LSP that is stuck or not refreshing, which can indicate a stalled routing process. A spike in adjacency state-change notifications across multiple interfaces would point to a flapping physical link or a misconfigured IS-IS timer rather than a single bad neighbor.

What Can Be Monitored

  • IS-IS adjacency state
  • link-state database (LSP) entries
  • IS-IS level configuration (L1/L2)
  • routing notifications/traps
  • interface metrics

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using isisSysNumUpdMerged OID:

Select a router or route server as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type isisSysNumUpdMerged into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of updates that have been merged into the Link State Database since the last routing calculation. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
