Description: Manages IP access control lists and security policy configuration on Ericsson SmartEdge BRAS platforms.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is RBN-IP-SECURITY-MIB?
RBN-IP-SECURITY-MIB is an Ericsson (formerly Redback Networks) enterprise MIB for the SmartEdge family of broadband remote access server (BRAS) and multi-service edge routers, covering management of IPsec security associations and tunnels. It exposes data on IPsec tunnel identity, type, remote peer identification, local address context, and event/fault information such as tunnel-down causes and severity-classified security events. Though focused on security configuration rather than raw hardware health, it supports monitoring of software-level status by tracking IPsec tunnel operational state, session teardown causes, and event timestamps/severities that reveal whether the VPN/tunnel service is functioning correctly. It builds on standard SNMPv2-SMI/SNMPv2-TC conventions and Ericsson's RBN enterprise MIB tree rather than IETF IPsec MIBs. It is typically deployed by network operators monitoring subscriber-facing or site-to-site IPsec tunnels terminated on SmartEdge BRAS platforms. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the RBN-IP-SECURITY-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RBN-IP-SECURITY-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Ericsson/Redback SmartEdge BRAS
- SmartEdge multi-service edge router
Monitoring Examples
An operator would poll rbnIpSecTunnelIdentifier and rbnIpSecTunnelName alongside rbnIpSecTunnelType to enumerate active IPsec tunnels, and check rbnIpSecTunnelDownCause when a tunnel drops to distinguish a peer-initiated teardown from a local policy or key-negotiation failure. The rbnIpSecEventSeverity, rbnIpSecEventType, and rbnIpSecEventProbableCause objects (fed via rbnIpSecNotifications traps) let an NMS flag security-relevant events such as authentication failures or renegotiations in near real time. rbnIpSecRemoteId and rbnIpSecRemoteIdType allow correlating a specific tunnel event back to the remote peer identity, and rbnIpSecLocalAddrContextName ties tunnels to specific routing contexts on multi-tenant SmartEdge devices.
What Can Be Monitored
- IPsec tunnel operational state
- tunnel down cause
- security event severity and type
- remote peer identity
- tunnel-to-context mapping
- IPsec event timestamps

RFC description
RedBack Networks (now Ericsson) enterprise MIB for IP security monitoring and configuration on networking equipment, supporting SNMP management of IPSec and related security functions.
Start monitoring Ericsson/Redback SmartEdge BRAS router (IPsec security association/tunnel monitoring) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
