Category: IP Routing

Description: Manages virtual router configuration, routing instances, and inter-VR routing on Juniper NetScreen devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is NETSCREEN-VR-MIB?

NETSCREEN-VR-MIB is a Juniper NetScreen (ScreenOS) vendor MIB for managing virtual routers (VRs), which are isolated routing instances used to segment routing tables within or across virtual systems (vsys). It exposes a table of configured virtual routers with identity, associated vsys, route-table sizing, and which dynamic routing protocols (OSPF/RIP/BGP) are enabled per VR. Its monitoring value is configuration/capacity status: administrators track current route counts against the maximum permitted routes per VR to catch a routing table nearing its configured limit, and confirm the expected dynamic protocols are enabled. It depends on companion NetScreen VR-scoped protocol MIBs (such as the OSPF-within-VR MIB) for the detailed protocol state of each virtual router. It is deployed on Juniper NetScreen firewalls used for multi-tenant or segmented routing environments. Engineers can download the NETSCREEN-VR-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in NETSCREEN-VR-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Juniper NetScreen firewall (virtual router context)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would walk vrTable/vrEntry, comparing vrNumRoutes to vrMaxRoutes for each vrName to catch a virtual router approaching its route-table capacity. The vrOspfRipBgpEnabled flags confirm which dynamic routing protocols are active on a given VR, and an unexpected combination would explain missing routes learned via a protocol thought to be enabled. The vrVsysName ties a virtual router back to its owning virtual system for multi-tenant accounting.

What Can Be Monitored

  • route count vs. maximum routes
  • enabled dynamic routing protocols (OSPF/RIP/BGP)
  • virtual router to vsys mapping
  • route table sharing/sharable flag
