What Is CPE-DSL-MIB?

CPE-DSL-MIB is a vendor-neutral, standards-oriented SNMP module for DSL customer-premises equipment (CPE) modems and routers, covering xDSL line configuration and status. It exposes DSL-line-specific data such as line connection status, sync rate, and related configuration parameters for the physical DSL circuit between the CPE and the DSLAM. Its monitoring value is centered on the hardware/physical-layer status of the DSL connection: administrators use it to check whether the line is synced/trained, what up/downstream sync rates have been negotiated, and other line-health indicators that reveal degraded or dropped DSL connections. It is closely related to (and likely aligned with) the standard ADSL/VDSL line MIB conventions from the IETF, since xDSL line MIBs generally share a common structural lineage. It is typically deployed on residential or small-business DSL modems/routers monitored by an ISP's remote management or support systems. Engineers can download the CPE-DSL-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

Monitoring Examples

No sample runtime objects were supplied for this module, so specific object names cannot be grounded here; in practice an ISP support tool would expect to poll DSL line status and sync-rate objects on the CPE to detect a line that has dropped sync or is training at a degraded rate, which typically indicates line noise, distance, or wiring problems.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cpeSysInfoUptime OID:

Select a Huawei xDSL CPE modem/router as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cpeSysInfoUptime into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. It is the working time since CPE rebooted. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an Integer32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value is unexpectedly low (e.g. under 10 minutes), since that indicates a recent, possibly unplanned, reboot or restart. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
