What Is ATM-MIB?

ATM-MIB is an IETF standards-track module defining managed objects for Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) interfaces, virtual path/channel connections (VPCs/VCCs), ATM cross-connects, and AAL5 entities and connections. It belongs to the WAN/carrier transport technology area and is vendor-neutral, covering any device implementing ATM interfaces. It exposes configuration and capacity data through objects like atmInterfaceConfTable/Entry -- including atmInterfaceMaxVpcs, atmInterfaceMaxVccs, atmInterfaceConfVpcs, and atmInterfaceConfVccs -- letting an administrator monitor how many virtual circuits an ATM interface supports versus how many are currently configured, along with addressing objects such as atmInterfaceAddressType and atmInterfaceAdminAddress for interface identity/status. While its primary focus is virtual-connection configuration and capacity rather than deep hardware sensors, it is essential for confirming interface-level connection health and utilization on ATM transport equipment. It depends on the standard Interfaces MIB (IF-MIB) for underlying interface indexing and typically works alongside AAL5-specific counters for cell/frame statistics, and network engineers who load the ATM-MIB MIB module into their management station alongside IF-MIB gain immediate access to the atmInterfaceConfTable objects needed for circuit capacity monitoring. It is deployed in legacy carrier and enterprise WAN environments that still run ATM-based transport (e.g. DSL aggregation backhaul, legacy WAN links).

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ATM-MIB. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Monitoring Examples

An administrator polling atmInterfaceConfTable/atmInterfaceConfEntry can compare atmInterfaceConfVpcs and atmInterfaceConfVccs (currently configured virtual paths/channels) against atmInterfaceMaxVpcs and atmInterfaceMaxVccs (interface capacity limits) to detect when an ATM interface is approaching its configured VPC/VCC capacity. Checking atmInterfaceMaxActiveVpiBits and atmInterfaceMaxActiveVciBits reveals the addressing range supported, useful when troubleshooting circuit provisioning failures. atmInterfaceIlmiVpi/Vci identify the ILMI management channel, and atmInterfaceAddressType/atmInterfaceAdminAddress expose the interface's administrative ATM address for connectivity verification.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using atmInterfaceConfVpcs OID:

Select a device implementing ATM-MIB as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type atmInterfaceConfVpcs into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports the number of virtual path connections (VPCs) currently in use on this ATM interface. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an INTEGER-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the count approaches the interface's configured VPC capacity (e.g. above 90% of the maximum), to catch exhaustion before new VPCs can no longer be established. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
