Description: Manages Cisco WAN SONET interface configuration and alarm status on MGX optical trunk modules.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CISCO-WAN-SONET-MIB?
CISCO-WAN-SONET-MIB extends the standard SONET/SDH MIB (RFC 2558) with Cisco-specific objects for SONET/SDH trunk interfaces on Cisco WAN MGX optical switching/multiplexing platforms. It defines section-layer alarm tables holding statistical alarm severity settings and configurable thresholds for Errored Seconds (ES), Severely Errored Seconds (SES), Severely Errored Framing Seconds (SEFS), and Coding Violations (CV), along with a current alarm status object per section. Its primary purpose is fault and performance monitoring of the physical SONET/SDH transport layer - detecting degraded optical line quality via error-second/violation thresholds and surfacing active alarm conditions, effectively a hardware transmission-health feed. It explicitly extends the IETF standard SONET-MIB (RFC 2558), layering Cisco-specific alarm/threshold semantics on top. It is typically deployed on Cisco MGX-series WAN switches carrying SONET/SDH optical trunks in carrier and enterprise WAN backbone environments, all monitored through the CISCO-WAN-SONET-MIB MIB's alarm and threshold objects.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-WAN-SONET-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cisco WAN MGX-series SONET/SDH optical switch/multiplexer
Monitoring Examples
An operator polling cwsSectionStatAlarmStatus can see whether a SONET section is currently in an alarm state, while cwsSectionCurrentSESsThreshold and cwsSectionTotalSESsThreshold reveal how close the current Severely Errored Seconds count is to the configured alarm threshold, warning of degrading line quality before a hard failure. cwsSectionCurrentCVsThreshold tracks Coding Violations, a leading indicator of optical signal degradation. The cwsSectionAlarmTable, together with cwsSectionStatisticalAlarmSeverity, lets an NMS prioritize which SONET section alarms need immediate attention.
What Can Be Monitored
- SONET section alarm status
- errored seconds (ES) threshold
- severely errored seconds (SES) threshold
- severely errored framing seconds (SEFS) threshold
- coding violations (CV) threshold

A 24 hour interval starts at twelve midnight with reference to node time. In case of a manual change in node time all the counters in cwsSectionCurrent24HrTable table get reset to 0. | |
| U32 cwsSectionCurrentCVsThreshold | 1.3.6.1.4.1.351.150.3.1.1.1.1.8 | Unsigned32 | read-write | This object indicates the threshold for coding violations(CV), above which alarm is generated. |
| U32 cwsSectionCurrentESsThreshold | 1.3.6.1.4.1.351.150.3.1.1.1.1.2 | Unsigned32 | read-write | This object indicates the threshold for errored seconds(ES), for the current 15-min interval, above which alarm is generated. |
| U32 cwsSectionCurrentSEFSsThreshold | 1.3.6.1.4.1.351.150.3.1.1.1.1.6 | Unsigned32 | read-write | This object indicates the threshold for severely errored framing seconds(SEFS), above which alarm is generated. |
| U32 cwsSectionCurrentSESsThreshold | 1.3.6.1.4.1.351.150.3.1.1.1.1.4 | Unsigned32 | read-write | This object indicates the threshold for severely errored seconds(SES) for the current 15-min interval, above which alarm is generated. |

| cwsSectionPrevious24HrEntry | 1.3.6.1.4.1.351.150.3.1.1.3.1 | not-accessible | An entry in the current 24 hour table. The entries exist for active sonet lines. | |
| NUM cwsSectionPrevious24HrESs | 1.3.6.1.4.1.351.150.3.1.1.3.1.1 | PerfIntervalCount | read-only | Number of errored seconds encountered in previous 24 hour interval. |
| NUM cwsSectionPrevious24HrSEFSs | 1.3.6.1.4.1.351.150.3.1.1.3.1.3 | PerfIntervalCount | read-only | Number of SEFSs encountered in previous 24 hour interval. |

| cwsSectionPrevious24HrTable | 1.3.6.1.4.1.351.150.3.1.1.3 | not-accessible | Contains sonet section previous 24 hour counters. A 24 hour interval starts at twelve midnight with reference to node time. In case of a manual change in node time all the counters in cwsSectionPrevious24HrTable table get reset to 0. | |
| U32 cwsSectionStatAlarmStatus | 1.3.6.1.4.1.351.150.3.1.1.1.1.10 | Unsigned32 | read-write | This variable indicates the status of the interface. When an alarm is raised, this would indicate which threshold was exceeded. This object is updated every 15-minutes. Once the current 15-min window has passed, and there are no errors in the current 15-min window, the object is cleared from the lower level sonet task. The cwsSectionStatAlarmStatus is a bit map represented as a sum, therefore, it can represent multiple defects simultaneously. If none of the bits are set, it indicates no defect. The various bit positions are: 1 sonetSectionTotalESs 2 sonetSectionTotalSESs 3 sonetSectionTotalSEFSs 4 sonetSectionTotalCVs 5 sonetSectionCurrentESs 6 sonetSectionCurrentSESs 7 sonetSectionCurrentSEFSs 8 sonetSectionCurrentCVs |
| INT cwsSectionStatisticalAlarmSeverity | 1.3.6.1.4.1.351.150.3.1.1.1.1.1 | INTEGER | read-write | By setting this object to major or minor, a minor or major severity alarm is raised when any statistical threshold is exceeded. By default TCA crossing does not raise any alarm. |
| U32 cwsSectionTotalCVsThreshold | 1.3.6.1.4.1.351.150.3.1.1.1.1.9 | Unsigned32 | read-write | This object indicates the threshold for coding violations(CV) for 24 hour interval, above which alarm is generated. |
| U32 cwsSectionTotalESsThreshold | 1.3.6.1.4.1.351.150.3.1.1.1.1.3 | Unsigned32 | read-write | This object indicates the threshold for errored seconds(ES), for the 24 hour interval, above which alarm is generated. |
| U32 cwsSectionTotalSEFSsThreshold | 1.3.6.1.4.1.351.150.3.1.1.1.1.7 | Unsigned32 | read-write | This object indicates the threshold for severely errored framing seconds(SEFS) for the 24 hour interval, above which alarm is generated. |
| U32 cwsSectionTotalSESsThreshold | 1.3.6.1.4.1.351.150.3.1.1.1.1.5 | Unsigned32 | read-write | This object indicates the threshold for severely errored seconds(SES) for the 24 hour interval, above which alarm is generated. |
