Category: Alarm and Event Management, Optical and WDM
Description: Manages alarm conditions and notifications for DCP digital communications platform equipment.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is DCP-ALARM-MIB?
DCP-ALARM-MIB is Smartoptics' enterprise-specific alarm MIB for its DCP optical transport platform, part of a family of optical/DWDM management MIBs. It exposes an alarm summary and an active-alarm-list table covering severity-classified conditions (critical, major, minor, warning) along with counts of active and logged alarms. It is used specifically to monitor fault/status health of the optical hardware — administrators track the highest active severity and per-severity active counts to detect degrading conditions such as a failing optical module or link, and use the last trap sequence number to confirm no alarm notifications were missed. It works alongside DCP-LINKVIEW-MIB, which supplies the physical-layer optical measurements that often underlie these alarms. Typical deployment is a Smartoptics DCP optical transport chassis in a metro/DWDM network monitored centrally for alarm status. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the DCP-ALARM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in DCP-ALARM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Smartoptics DCP optical transport platform
Monitoring Examples
An admin would poll dcpAlarmGeneralHighestSeverity together with dcpAlarmGeneralActiveCritical/ActiveMajor/ActiveMinor/ActiveWarning to get an at-a-glance severity breakdown, then walk dcpAlarmActiveListTable/dcpAlarmActiveListEntry (indexed by dcpAlarmActiveListIndex) to read dcpAlarmActiveListLocation for the specific card or port raising the alarm. A rising dcpAlarmGeneralNumberActiveList combined with a jump in dcpAlarmGeneralLastTrapSeqNumber would indicate a burst of new fault events needing investigation.
What Can Be Monitored
- active alarm count by severity
- highest active alarm severity
- active alarm location/list
- alarm log count
- trap sequence number
