What Is CISCOWAN-SMI?

CISCOWAN-SMI defines the Structure of Management Information for Cisco's WAN product line, historically associated with the StrataCom enterprise number, establishing the OID hierarchy under which Cisco WAN switching and ATM/Frame Relay product MIBs register their management objects. It belongs to the wide-area networking / carrier switching equipment category and, like other SMI modules, exposes no data objects of its own. Because it contains only organizational OID assignments, it cannot be polled for hardware or software status such as uptime, temperature, or CPU load -- that granular monitoring is the responsibility of the individual Cisco WAN product MIBs built beneath this tree. Every Cisco StrataCom/WAN-switching MIB depends on this module to obtain its place in the enterprise OID space, so engineers who download CISCOWAN-SMI as part of a Cisco WAN MIB bundle will find it defines only that registration tree rather than any pollable objects. It is deployed only as a foundational dependency in environments running legacy Cisco WAN switching platforms (e.g. IGX, BPX).

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCOWAN-SMI. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco WAN switching platforms (e.g. IGX, BPX StrataCom switches)

Monitoring Examples

There are no runtime sample objects for this module since it is purely a Structure of Management Information (SMI) definition assigning the OID root for Cisco's StrataCom/WAN product family. No realistic monitoring scenario applies directly to this module; actual polling of card status, trunk utilization, or alarms would occur against the specific Cisco WAN switch MIBs registered underneath this tree. This module itself is organizational scaffolding rather than a data source.
