What Is RMON2-MIB?

RMON2-MIB is a vendor-neutral, standards-based IETF MIB that extends the original RMON-MIB (RFC 1757) with network-layer and application-layer traffic monitoring, adding protocol distribution analysis and address mapping across higher OSI layers. It exposes data such as the protocol directory (which protocols the probe can recognize), address-map, host, and matrix statistics at the network and application layers, going beyond RMON1's data-link-layer focus. Its monitoring value is chiefly around traffic/performance visibility rather than physical hardware sensors: it lets an administrator see which network- and application-layer protocols are consuming bandwidth and identify anomalous traffic patterns or a spike in a particular protocol's usage. It explicitly augments RFC 1757 (RMON-MIB) and depends on its base tables and conventions, so RMON2 is meaningful only in the context of an RMON1-capable probe. It is deployed on RMON probes or switches/routers with embedded RMON2 agents used for detailed traffic analysis in enterprise or service-provider networks, and in MIB repositories and vendor documentation it is typically catalogued simply under the filename rmon2-mib.

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would populate protocolDirTable/protocolDirEntry (protocolDirID, protocolDirDescr, protocolDirType) to see which protocols a probe recognizes, then correlate that with host- and matrix-level statistics to see which network-layer protocol is generating unusual traffic volume on a segment. A sudden appearance of an unexpected protocolDirLocalIndex entry with high traffic could indicate a misconfigured device or unauthorized application traffic on the monitored segment.
