What Is TIMETRA-VRTR-MIB?

TIMETRA-VRTR-MIB is Alcatel-Lucent's (now Nokia's, following the Timetra acquisition) proprietary MIB for managing virtual routers on the 7x50 Service Router (SR) platform, covering virtual router creation, configuration, and administrative/operational state as part of the device's transport and routing infrastructure. Each TIMETRA-VRTR-MIB OID sits under the vendor's Timetra enterprise branch, with the vRtrConfTable forming the core per-virtual-router registration point beneath it. It exposes virtual-router inventory and lifecycle objects: counts of configured and active virtual routers (vRtrConfiguredVRtrs, vRtrActiveVRtrs), a per-virtual-router configuration table (vRtrConfTable/vRtrConfEntry with vRtrID, vRtrName, vRtrRowStatus, vRtrAdminState), ID-allocation state (vRtrNextVRtrID), and threshold/soak-time tuning parameters (vRtrRouteThresholdSoakTime, vRtrIPv6RouteThresholdSoakTime, vRtrMaxARPEntries). This makes it useful for monitoring the configuration and operational status of virtual routing instances on the box — confirming a virtual router's admin/row status is active, tracking how many virtual routers are configured versus actively running, and checking ARP-table capacity limits — though it is focused on routing-instance state rather than chassis hardware sensors like temperature or fans. It is part of the broader Alcatel/Nokia TIMETRA MIB family and depends on companion Timetra modules (e.g., for interfaces and general system objects) for full context. It is deployed on Alcatel-Lucent/Nokia 7x50 Service Router platforms in service-provider transport and VPN/routing environments.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in TIMETRA-VRTR-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Monitoring Examples

An admin would poll vRtrConfiguredVRtrs versus vRtrActiveVRtrs to detect a virtual router that is configured but failed to come active, and check vRtrAdminState/vRtrRowStatus in the vRtrConfTable (indexed by vRtrID, with vRtrName for identification) to confirm a specific virtual router instance is administratively enabled and properly provisioned. A vRtrRowStatus stuck in a notReady or notInService state would flag a provisioning problem, while vRtrMaxARPEntries helps catch a virtual router approaching its configured ARP-table capacity limit.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using vRtrIfTotalNumber OID:

Select a Nokia/Alcatel-Lucent 7x50 Service Router as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type vRtrIfTotalNumber into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. It reports the current number of router interfaces configured on this system. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an INTEGER-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the count drops below the number of interfaces you expect to be configured, which would indicate an interface was removed or failed to come up. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
