Description: Juniper Networks MIB for Service OAM (SOAM) performance monitoring of Ethernet OAM sessions per ITU-T Y.1731 and IEEE 802.1ag.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is JUNIPER-SOAM-PM-MIB?

JUNIPER-SOAM-PM-MIB is a Juniper Networks enterprise MIB that supports Service OAM (SOAM) Performance Monitoring for Ethernet networks, implementing the ITU-T Y.1731 and IEEE 802.1ag standards for carrier Ethernet operations, administration, and maintenance. It exposes configuration and results data for Maintenance End Points (MEPs) performing loss measurement (LM), synthetic loss measurement (SLM), and delay measurement (DM) sessions. In monitoring terms it is used almost exclusively for software-level service-health status rather than hardware: it reveals whether OAM measurement sessions are enabled and running, their responder mode, and the resulting frame-loss and delay statistics that indicate degrading Ethernet service quality. It builds on and complements the standard IEEE 802.1ag CFM MIB and ITU-T Y.1731 performance monitoring framework rather than duplicating them. It is deployed on Juniper routers and switches acting as carrier Ethernet demarcation or aggregation devices where service providers need to verify SLA compliance for Ethernet virtual circuits. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the JUNIPER-SOAM-PM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in JUNIPER-SOAM-PM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Juniper routers
  • Juniper Ethernet switches
  • carrier Ethernet aggregation/demarcation devices

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll jnxSoamPmMepTable/jnxSoamPmMepEntry to enumerate configured MEPs and check jnxSoamPmMepLmSingleEndedResponder or jnxSoamPmMepDmSingleEndedResponder to confirm loss/delay measurement responders are active. The jnxSoamLmCfgTable lets an admin inspect per-session loss measurement configuration (jnxSoamLmCfgType, jnxSoamLmCfgVersion, jnxSoamLmCfgEnabled) to verify a measurement session is correctly enabled. A sudden absence of expected LM/DM sessions in these tables, or an unresponsive single-ended responder, would flag a break in Ethernet OAM continuity that likely correlates with a service-affecting fault. jnxSoamPmNotifications would carry traps for such conditions.

What Can Be Monitored

  • MEP configuration status
  • loss measurement (LM) session state
  • synthetic loss measurement (SLM) session state
  • delay measurement (DM) session state
  • single-ended responder status
  • OAM performance notifications

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using jnxSoamLmCurrentStatsForwardTransmittedFrames OID:

Select a Juniper router/switch, carrier Ethernet demarcation/aggregation device (SOAM performance monitoring) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type jnxSoamLmCurrentStatsForwardTransmittedFrames into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. This object contains the number of frames transmitted in the forward direction by this MEP. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Gauge32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
