What Is JUNIPER-SMI?

JUNIPER-SMI is the Structure of Management Information module for Juniper Networks, defining the top-level enterprise OID hierarchy (jnxExperiment, jnxNsm, jnxCA, jnxAAA, jnxAdvancedInsightMgr, jnxBxMibRoot, etc.) under which all Juniper-specific MIB modules covering chassis, routing engine, interfaces, and services across Junos-based platforms register their objects. The sample content is entirely subtree/registration nodes with no functional data objects of its own. It therefore has no direct monitoring role for hardware or software status by itself; that is provided by the extensive family of Juniper functional MIBs (e.g., chassis-defines and CPU/memory/temperature MIBs) that build on these namespaces. It is a required dependency for virtually every Juniper-specific MIB module. It's deployed wherever Juniper Networks routers, switches, and security appliances running Junos are managed via SNMP. The JUNIPER-SMI OID tree itself is purely structural, giving every Juniper MIB module a consistent registration point beneath the enterprise namespace.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in JUNIPER-SMI. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Juniper Networks routers/switches/security appliances (any generation, Junos enterprise OID root)

Monitoring Examples

This module defines only enterprise OID registration subtrees (e.g. jnxNsm, jnxAAA, jnxAdvancedInsightMgr) with no runtime tables or scalars, so there is no monitoring scenario to describe directly; actual device health and performance data such as chassis temperature, CPU/memory utilization, and interface counters is exposed by the functional Juniper MIBs registered beneath these namespaces.
