Category: Network Management Tools

Description: Manages network probe and RMON probe device configuration, data collection, and remote monitoring parameters.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is PROBE-MIB?

PROBE-MIB is a legacy vendor MIB for managing dedicated network probe/RMON monitoring appliances, distinct from the standard RMON-MIB itself. It exposes hardware and firmware identification objects, probe reset control, firmware download/upgrade management via TFTP, and serial port configuration for the probe unit. This MIB is squarely about monitoring the health and software state of the monitoring device itself — reporting probeFirmwareRev and probeHardwareRev versions, probeDateTime for clock sync verification, and probeDownloadStatus during firmware upgrades, plus supporting remote resets via probeResetControl. It is commonly used alongside standard RMON-MIB, since the probe device instrumented here is typically the same appliance collecting RMON statistics. It is typically deployed on dedicated RMON probe appliances or protocol analyzers placed on network segments for remote traffic monitoring. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the PROBE-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in PROBE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • dedicated RMON/network probe appliances
  • vendor-implemented, may vary by manufacturer

Monitoring Examples

An administrator can poll probeFirmwareRev and probeHardwareRev to inventory exactly which firmware/hardware revision a deployed probe is running before triggering an upgrade via probeDownloadTFTPServer, probeDownloadFile, and probeDownloadAction, then watch probeDownloadStatus to confirm the transfer completed successfully. Checking probeDateTime against actual time can reveal a probe with clock drift, and probeEchoInterval configures how often the probe reports keepalive status back to the management station.

What Can Be Monitored

  • probe firmware revision
  • probe hardware revision
  • probe date/time
  • firmware download/upgrade status
  • reset control state
  • echo/keepalive interval
