Category: Network Management Tools

Description: Provides User-based Security Model (USM) extensions and custom security parameter objects for the PySNMP Python library.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is PYSNMP-USM-MIB?

The PYSNMP-USM-MIB is a software-oriented MIB defined by the PySNMP Python SNMP library to extend the standard User-based Security Model (USM) with implementation-specific objects for managing SNMPv3 authentication and privacy secrets/keys. It exposes configuration data such as per-user secret and localized key tables, and a discovery/discoverable flag controlling USM engine discovery behavior, rather than any physical device telemetry. As this is a security-configuration MIB for a software agent rather than hardware, its role in monitoring is limited to confirming the software-level security posture of a PySNMP-based agent: which users have provisioned keys, and whether USM discovery is enabled. It directly depends on, and extends, the standard SNMP-USER-BASED-SM-MIB (USM) defined in RFC 3414. It is used in software/tooling contexts where developers build custom SNMP agents or test harnesses on top of the PySNMP library, rather than being tied to any physical network device, making this PYSNMP-USM-MIB reference a useful guide for implementing SNMPv3 security in PySNMP-based tooling.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in PYSNMP-USM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB extension specific to the PySNMP software library, not tied to a physical device
  • SNMP agent/management software

Monitoring Examples

A developer or administrator managing a PySNMP-based agent could poll pysnmpUsmSecretTable/pysnmpUsmSecretEntry to confirm which pysnmpUsmSecretUserName entries have configured pysnmpUsmSecretAuthKey/pysnmpUsmSecretPrivKey values and check pysnmpUsmSecretStatus for each. Checking pysnmpUsmDiscoverable and pysnmpUsmDiscovery clarifies whether the agent currently allows USM engine-ID discovery, which affects how SNMPv3 managers can establish secure sessions with it.

What Can Be Monitored

  • USM secret/key table entries
  • per-user auth/privacy key status
  • USM discovery enabled/disabled state
