Category: Network Management Tools, Vendor SMI and Registration

Description: Provides source MIB mapping and cross-module reference definitions for the PySNMP Python SNMP toolkit.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is PYSNMP-SOURCE-MIB?

PYSNMP-SOURCE-MIB is a vendor-neutral module specific to the PySNMP Python SNMP toolkit, defining objects that let an SNMP engine or standard SNMP application bind to a variable/configurable source transport endpoint rather than a fixed default. It exposes a source-address table mapping transport addresses to source-endpoint configuration used by the SNMP engine itself. Rather than monitoring external hardware, this MIB is about monitoring/configuring the software behavior of the SNMP agent/engine process running PySNMP — specifically which local source address/transport it uses when sending SNMP traffic, relevant to multi-homed or NAT'd management stations. It is explicitly an implementation-specific extension tied to PySNMP's SNMP engine, layered on top of the standard SNMP framework MIBs (SNMP-FRAMEWORK-MIB/SNMPv2-MIB). It is deployed wherever the PySNMP toolkit is used to build custom SNMP agents or managers needing explicit source-address control, such as software-based NMS tools or agent simulators. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the PYSNMP-SOURCE-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in PYSNMP-SOURCE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • hosts running the PySNMP Python SNMP toolkit (software agents/managers)
  • vendor-neutral but implementation-specific to PySNMP

Monitoring Examples

An administrator configuring a PySNMP-based agent can poll snmpSourceAddrTable via snmpSourceAddrEntry to confirm which snmpSourceAddrTAddress is bound as the outbound transport source for a given SNMP session, useful when a multi-homed host needs to guarantee responses originate from a specific interface address. Verifying pysnmpSourceMIBObjects entries against pysnmpSourceMIBCompliances can confirm the running implementation conforms to the expected source-address behavior.

What Can Be Monitored

  • configured source transport address
  • source address table entries
  • SNMP engine source-endpoint binding
