What Is FC-MGMT-MIB?
FC-MGMT-MIB is the IETF standards-track MIB (RFC 4044) for managing Fibre Channel-attached devices, defining objects for FC switches, host bus adapters, and other fabric-attached elements independent of any specific vendor. It exposes data covering FC instance identity (World Wide Names), instance function/status, fabric membership, and switch-level information, giving a vendor-neutral view into SAN fabric health. It is directly useful for monitoring both hardware and software status: fcmInstanceStatus reports the operational status of an FC instance, fcmInstanceWwn and fcmInstanceTextName identify the specific port or device, and fcmInstanceSoftwareIndex links the instance to its associated software/firmware entry for version tracking. Administrators consulting the FC-MGMT-MIB OID list in a MIB browser can quickly map each fcmInstance object to its position in the standards-based fcmgmt tree before cross-referencing it with vendor-specific SAN MIBs. It is typically used alongside the Fibre Channel Fabric-Element MIB and entity MIBs (ENTITY-MIB) for physical inventory correlation, and it depends on FC-standard concepts like WWNs and fabric IDs defined by ANSI T11. It is deployed in storage-area network (SAN) environments to monitor Fibre Channel switches, HBAs, and other FC-attached storage-networking hardware from any compliant vendor.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in FC-MGMT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
What Can Be Monitored
- Fibre Channel instance operational status
- World Wide Name (WWN) identification
- fabric ID/membership
- associated software/firmware version index
- switch-level Fibre Channel information
Supported Devices
- vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
- Fibre Channel switches
- Fibre Channel host bus adapters (HBAs) and SAN-attached storage devices
Monitoring Examples
A SAN administrator would poll fcmInstanceTable/fcmInstanceEntry, checking fcmInstanceStatus to confirm each Fibre Channel instance (port or device) is online, and fcmInstanceWwn to positively identify which physical HBA or switch port is being reported, which is critical when troubleshooting fabric zoning or connectivity issues. fcmInstanceFabricId reveals which fabric a switch or device belongs to, useful for spotting a device that has unexpectedly merged into or dropped from a fabric, while fcmInstanceSoftwareIndex ties the instance back to its firmware/software version entry for consistency checks across a SAN fabric.

| fcmgmtObjects | 1.3.6.1.2.1.10.56.1 | |||
| fcmInstanceTable | 1.3.6.1.2.1.10.56.1.1 | not-accessible | Information about the local Fibre Channel management instances. | |
| fcmInstanceEntry | 1.3.6.1.2.1.10.56.1.1.1 | not-accessible | A list of attributes for a particular local Fibre Channel management instance. | |
| U32 fcmInstanceIndex | 1.3.6.1.2.1.10.56.1.1.1.1 | Unsigned32 | not-accessible | An arbitrary integer value that uniquely identifies this instance amongst all local Fibre Channel management instances. It is mandatory to keep this value constant between restarts of the agent, and to make every possible effort to keep it constant across restarts (but note, it is unrealistic to expect it to remain constant across all re-configurations of the local system, e.g., across the replacement of all non- volatile storage). |
| FCN fcmInstanceWwn | 1.3.6.1.2.1.10.56.1.1.1.2 | FcNameIdOrZero | read-only | If the instance has one (or more) WWN(s), then this object contains that (or one of those) WWN(s). If the instance does not have a WWN associated with it, then this object contains the zero-length string. |
| FCU fcmInstanceFunctions | 1.3.6.1.2.1.10.56.1.1.1.3 | FcUnitFunctions | read-only | One (or more) Fibre Channel unit functions being performed by this instance. |
| I32 fcmInstancePhysicalIndex | 1.3.6.1.2.1.10.56.1.1.1.4 | Integer32 | read-only | If this management instance corresponds to a physical component (or to a hierarchy of physical components) identified by the Entity-MIB, then this object's value is the value of the entPhysicalIndex of that component (or of the component at the root of that hierarchy). If there is no correspondence to a physical component (or no component that has an entPhysicalIndex value), then the value of this object is zero. |
| I32 fcmInstanceSoftwareIndex | 1.3.6.1.2.1.10.56.1.1.1.5 | Integer32 | read-only | If this management instance corresponds to an installed software module identified in the Host Resources MIB, then this object's value is the value of the hrSWInstalledIndex of that module. If there is no correspondence to an installed software module (or no module that has a hrSWInstalledIndex value), then the value of this object is zero. |
| INT fcmInstanceStatus | 1.3.6.1.2.1.10.56.1.1.1.6 | INTEGER | read-only | Overall status of the Fibre Channel entity/entities managed by this management instance. The value should reflect the most serious status of such entities. |
