Organization: Cisco Small Business
Last Updated: 2006-02-12
Category: Technology: VLAN, Vendor: Cisco
Description: Manages VLAN creation, membership, and configuration on Cisco Small Business switches.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CISCOSB-vlan-MIB?
This Cisco Small Business proprietary MIB manages VLAN configuration on the switch, covering VLAN naming, tag assignment, per-port VLAN mode, and related switching behaviors like unknown-unicast flooding and voice VLAN support. It is predominantly a configuration MIB, exposing VLAN name-to-tag mappings, port VLAN membership modes, and feature toggles, rather than a fault or performance-counter MIB. In terms of hardware/software status monitoring, its value lies in verifying the switch's current VLAN configuration state (which VLANs exist, which ports belong to them, whether the default VLAN and voice VLAN features are enabled) so operators can catch misconfiguration that would explain traffic segmentation problems. It parallels the concepts in the IEEE 802.1Q VLAN standard and the IETF Q-BRIDGE-MIB, even though it's a proprietary reimplementation. It is used on Cisco Small Business managed switches (Sx200/300/500 series) in any network segmented by VLANs. Engineers can download the CISCOSB-vlan-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCOSB-vlan-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cisco Small Business managed switch
Monitoring Examples
An admin queries vlanNameTable to enumerate every configured VLAN via vlanNameName and vlanNameTag, then cross-references vlanPortModeTable's vlanPortModeState for a given port to confirm it's set to trunk/access mode as expected. If a device isn't reachable on a VLAN, checking whether vlanDefault or vlanVoice is unexpectedly enabled, or whether vlanSendUnknownToAllPorts is misconfigured, can reveal the root cause of unexpected flooding or isolation behavior.
What Can Be Monitored
- VLAN name-to-tag mapping
- per-port VLAN mode
- default VLAN configuration
- voice VLAN status
- unknown-unicast flooding behavior
