Description: Generic Attribute Registration Protocol MIB for managing GARP participant state machines on LAN bridge ports.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is GARP-MIB?

GARP-MIB is a vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB (per RFC 4363) for the Generic Attribute Registration Protocol, the underlying mechanism that GVRP (VLAN registration) and GMRP (multicast registration) use to propagate attribute state across bridged LAN ports. It exposes per-application tables describing each GARP application's type, name, and operational status, plus a per-port table showing GARP's operational state on each bridge port. Its monitoring value is squarely in software/protocol health: garpApplicationFailedRegistrations is a direct fault indicator showing that VLAN or multicast group registrations are failing to propagate, and garpApplicationOperationStatus / garpPortOperationStatus reveal whether GARP itself is running correctly on a given port -- both critical for diagnosing dynamic VLAN or multicast-group propagation problems in a bridged network. It is an extension to, and depends on, the IEEE 802.1D bridge model and standard BRIDGE-MIB port indexing, since GARP applications are always tied to bridge ports. It is deployed on any IEEE 802.1-compliant LAN switch supporting GVRP/GMRP dynamic registration, historically including Cabletron/Enterasys equipment among many others. Engineers can download the GARP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in GARP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • IEEE 802.1 GARP-capable LAN bridges/switches (e.g., historically Cabletron/Enterasys switches)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll garpApplicationTable/garpApplicationEntry (garpApplicationAppType, garpApplicationName, garpApplicationFailedRegistrations, garpApplicationOperationStatus) to see whether GVRP or GMRP is running and whether registrations are failing, and would check garpPortOperationTable/garpPortOperationEntry (garpPortOperationAppType, garpPortOperationPort, garpPortOperationStatus) to confirm GARP is operational on a specific switch port. A rising garpApplicationFailedRegistrations count would reveal that dynamic VLAN or multicast-group registration is breaking down somewhere in the bridged topology.

What Can Be Monitored

  • GARP application type (GVRP/GMRP) operational status
  • failed registration count per application
  • per-port GARP operational status
  • GARP application name/identification
