Category: Network Management, Products/Registration

Description: Provides MIB module registration and capability declaration objects.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is MODULES-MIB?

MODULES-MIB appears to be a legacy enterprise MIB whose actual objects describe hardware modules in a multi-protocol Ethernet/token-ring hub or concentrator chassis, despite its generic short description; it covers Ethernet Access Group (ethAg) and Ethernet Group (ethGroup) configuration alongside token-ring and terminal-server branches. It exposes per-module hardware configuration such as FIFO settings, 10BaseT-plus mode, internal port redundancy, backbone mode, and FOIRL (fiber optic inter-repeater link) mode for each Ethernet group in an installed module. It is used to monitor and configure the hardware-level operating mode of individual pluggable modules in a chassis -- e.g., whether backbone or redundancy modes are engaged and which physical media mode each group is running -- functioning as low-level hardware status rather than software or traffic data. No explicit dependency on other standard MIBs is evident from the available objects. This class of MIB is typically deployed on legacy multi-media Ethernet/token-ring hub or concentrator chassis where administrators manage individual pluggable modules' media and redundancy settings. Engineers can download the MODULES-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in MODULES-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • legacy multi-protocol Ethernet/token-ring hub or concentrator chassis

Monitoring Examples

An admin could walk ethAgTable/ethAgEntry keyed by ethAgId to identify each Ethernet Access Group module in the chassis and check ethAgPerfBusSelection to confirm which performance bus it is wired to. Within ethGroupTable/ethGroupEntry, polling ethGroupBackboneMode and ethGroupIntPortsRedundancy for a given ethGroupId reveals whether a module has been placed into backbone/redundant mode, while ethGroupFOIRLPlusMode or ethGroup10BTPlus shows which physical media mode is active -- useful for spotting a module misconfigured for the wrong cable type.

What Can Be Monitored

  • Ethernet access group performance bus selection
  • Ethernet group FIFO setting
  • 10BaseT-plus mode
  • internal port redundancy state
  • backbone mode
  • FOIRL mode
