fethPortSymbolErrors

Module: MODULES-MIB

OID (symbolic): MODULES-MIB::fethPortSymbolErrors

OID (numeric): 1.3.6.1.4.1.81.12.6.1.1.1.25

Node type: OBJECT-TYPE

Type: Counter

Access: read-only

Description: This counter is incremented by one each time when valid length packet was received at the port and there was at least one occurrence of an invalid data symbol. This can increment only once per valid carrier event. A collision presence at any port of the repeater containing port N, will not cause this attribute to increment.

This Counter has a maximum increment rate of 160,000 counts per second for 100Mb/s implementation. REFERENCE Reference IEEE Draft Std 802.3u/D4 Rptr Mgt, 30.4.3.1.17, aSymbolErrorDuringPacket. Reference IETF 100Base-T Repeater MIB, rptr100MonitorPortSymbolErrors.

What is fethPortSymbolErrors?

Counts frames received on this 100Mbps port that were of valid length but contained at least one invalid 4B/5B line-code symbol, a physical-layer signal-integrity problem; because this error can increment extremely fast (up to 160,000 times per second at full line rate), a sudden high rate strongly suggests a failing transceiver or badly degraded cable on this port.
