What Is NETSCREEN-SMI?
NETSCREEN-SMI is the Structure of Management Information module for Juniper NetScreen (ScreenOS) devices, defining the top-level enterprise OID tree under which all other NetScreen-specific MIBs (products, traps, QoS, VPN, IDS, etc.) are organized. As an SMI module it does not itself expose runtime data objects; instead it establishes branches such as netscreenProducts (device model identification), netscreenTrap/netscreenTrapInfo (the root for fault/event notifications), and feature-area branches like netscreenIDS, netscreenVpn, and netscreenQos. Its relevance to monitoring is structural rather than direct — it underpins how fault traps and per-feature status MIBs are located and identified, including product-model identification via sysObjectID. Every other NetScreen MIB module depends on this SMI module for its OID root. Any NETSCREEN-SMI OID seen in a trap or object identifier is simply pointing back to this organizing namespace rather than to a directly polled value. It is present, indirectly, on every Juniper NetScreen ScreenOS firewall/VPN appliance as the organizing namespace for its SNMP instrumentation.

You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Monitoring Examples
This module itself defines only structural/registration nodes rather than monitorable data instances — netscreenProducts for device model IDs, netscreenTrapInfo as the parent for trap variable bindings, and category roots like netscreenIDS, netscreenVpn, netscreenQos under which actual monitorable objects live in other modules. There is no direct polling scenario to describe honestly for this conformance/namespace module beyond using netscreenProducts values to identify a specific NetScreen appliance model via sysObjectID.
