What Is RFC1248-MIB?

RFC1248-MIB is a vendor-neutral, standards-based IETF MIB defining management objects for OSPF version 1, the link-state interior gateway routing protocol, as specified in RFC 1248. It exposes routing-protocol configuration and operational data such as OSPF area definitions, neighbor adjacency state, and interface-level OSPF parameters. Its monitoring value is centered on software/protocol status rather than physical hardware: tracking neighbor state transitions and area status reveals routing instability, adjacency flaps, or misconfiguration that can cause routing loops or blackholes. It is an early, largely superseded precursor depending on the same OSPF concepts later refined in OSPF-MIB (RFC 1253 and successors), and is commonly seen only on legacy routing platforms. It would be deployed on older router software stacks running OSPFv1-era implementations where routing protocol health needs to be tracked via SNMP. Engineers can download the RFC1248-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

Monitoring Examples

An operator would monitor the OSPF neighbor table to check neighbor state (e.g., full, init, down) per interface, and the area table to confirm area IDs and stub/backbone configuration match design intent. A neighbor stuck in a non-full state, or repeated state transitions, would indicate an adjacency problem such as mismatched hello/dead timers or a flapping link.
