All MIBs › RFC1213-SMI
Category: IETF Standards
Description: Defines SMI structure and OID assignments for the MIB-II object hierarchy per RFC 1213.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is RFC1213-SMI?
RFC1213-SMI is a vendor-neutral, standards-based module that defines the Structure of Management Information (SMI) and the top-level object identifier assignments for the classic MIB-II tree (system, interfaces, at, ip, icmp, tcp, udp, egp, transmission, and snmp branches). It does not itself expose runtime data; instead it establishes the OID hierarchy that other MIB-II modules populate with actual counters and status. Consequently it has no direct hardware/software status objects such as uptime or temperature by itself — those live in the child modules built on this structure (e.g., sysUpTime in the System group, or ifOperStatus in the Interfaces group). Virtually every other standard and vendor MIB depends on this module for its OID placement within the mib-2 subtree, making it one of the most foundational dependencies in all of SNMP. It is present in essentially every SNMP-capable device's compiled MIB tree as a structural definition rather than something monitored directly. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the RFC1213-SMI RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RFC1213-SMI. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer — applies to essentially any SNMP-capable network device
Monitoring Examples
This module defines only the mib-2 OID subtree nodes (system, interfaces, ip, etc.) rather than tables or scalar counters, so there are no concrete objects here to poll; actual monitoring happens via the child MIBs (e.g., IF-MIB, IP-MIB) whose objects are placed under this structure.
