What Is RFC1317-MIB?

RFC1317-MIB is a vendor-neutral, standards-based IETF MIB defining management objects for RS-232-like asynchronous serial interfaces, as specified in RFC 1317. It exposes per-port configuration (signal state, flow control) and statistics (signal transitions, error counts) for serial ports on a managed device. Its monitoring focus is on hardware/interface status: detecting a serial port's signal-state changes (e.g., DTR/DCD toggling), input/output errors, and overall port health, which is especially relevant for console, modem, or terminal-server style connections. It complements the general Interfaces MIB (IF-MIB) by providing the serial-specific media details layered on top of a standard ifIndex entry, and network engineers commonly keep the RFC1317-MIB reference at hand when correlating a port's signal and error objects back to its ifIndex counterpart. It is typically deployed on terminal servers, console servers, and routers/modems that expose async serial ports for out-of-band management or dial-up connectivity.

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll the RS-232-like port table for signal-state counters and error counts per port index, correlated to the corresponding ifIndex in IF-MIB, to see if a console port is experiencing frequent carrier-detect transitions or framing errors. A rising error count on a specific port combined with unexpected signal-state flapping would indicate a bad cable, faulty modem, or misconfigured flow control on that serial line.
