Category: Legacy Hubs and Repeaters

Description: Defines revision 4 IEEE 802.3 repeater MIB objects for Ethernet hub monitoring and control.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is REPEATER-REV4-MIB?

REPEATER-REV4-MIB is a vendor-neutral IETF standards MIB (RFC 1516, revision 4 of the IEEE 802.3 repeater MIB) defining management objects for Ethernet repeater hubs — multiport devices that regenerate and broadcast Ethernet signals across all connected ports. It exposes repeater-level management objects (port count, which ports are enabled/on/operating) alongside per-port packet statistics such as packet counts, byte counts, collisions, and errors. Its monitoring purpose is entirely about hardware port health and traffic statistics on legacy shared-Ethernet hubs: tracking enabled versus on/operating port state to spot ports that should be active but aren't, and collision/error counts to detect a port with cabling or NIC problems. As a foundational 802.3-era standard, it predates and is largely superseded by switch-oriented MIBs (BRIDGE-MIB, IF-MIB) but remains relevant only where legacy repeater hardware is still in service. It is deployed on legacy Ethernet repeater/hub hardware, now mostly found in older industrial, lab, or legacy network installations rather than modern datacenters. Engineers can download the REPEATER-REV4-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in REPEATER-REV4-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB (RFC 1516/IEEE 802.3), not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • Ethernet repeater hubs (legacy shared-media hub hardware)

Monitoring Examples

An admin would poll rptrMgmtPortCount and rptrMgmtPortsEnable/rptrMgmtPortsOn/rptrMgmtPortsOper to confirm which repeater ports are configured, powered, and actually operating, then check rptrPktStatsColls and rptrPktStatsErrors per port — a port with a collision or error count climbing much faster than its peers typically points to a bad cable, duplex mismatch, or failing NIC on that segment. rptrMgmtResetCounters would be used to clear stats after remediating the fault to confirm the problem is resolved.

What Can Be Monitored

  • port enabled/on/operational status
  • port packet and byte counts
  • port collision count
  • port error count
