Category: Legacy Hubs and Repeaters

Description: Manages IEEE 802.3 Ethernet repeater (hub) port statistics and configuration per IETF standards.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is REPEATER-MIB?

REPEATER-MIB is grounded in the IETF standard for managing IEEE 802.3 Ethernet repeaters (hubs), though this instance shows Cabletron-specific OID branch usage alongside the standard objects. It exposes per-port and per-board configuration and status (port enable, on/off, and operational state, board mapping) plus packet-level statistics such as total packets, bytes, collisions, and alignment/other errors. For hardware status monitoring, it lets an administrator confirm whether repeater ports are enabled and operationally up, and track rising error/collision counts that signal a failing port, bad cable, or faulty NIC. It predates and complements the modern interfaces MIB (IF-MIB), sharing similar operational-status concepts for shared-media hub hardware. It's typically deployed on legacy Ethernet hub/repeater hardware, including Cabletron repeater products, in older LAN wiring closets. Engineers can download the REPEATER-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in REPEATER-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Ethernet repeater/hub
  • Cabletron repeater hardware

Monitoring Examples

Comparing rptrMgmtPortsEnable against rptrMgmtPortsOn for a given board reveals whether a configured port has failed to come up. rptrPktStatsColls and rptrPktStatsErrors climbing quickly relative to rptrPktStatsPackets on one port point to a duplex mismatch or bad cable causing excessive collisions on that segment. rptrMgmtBoardMap and rptrMgmtInterfaceNum let an operator map the physical repeater board/port numbering to the logical interface used elsewhere in management tools.

What Can Be Monitored

  • port enable/operational state
  • packet counts
  • byte counts
  • collision counts
  • error/alignment counts
  • board-to-port mapping
