What Is CISCOSB-rndApplications?

CISCOSB-rndApplications is a Cisco Small Business private MIB for configuring and monitoring generic application-level status of remote network elements from the perspective of the local switch, functioning as a lightweight built-in monitoring/polling subsystem. It exposes a table of monitored elements (each with an address, SNMP community, and label) plus alarm enabling, alarm interval, default polling interval, and a default log file, essentially letting the device itself poll other SNMP agents and raise alarms. Its monitoring role is about software-level service/reachability status of other elements rather than the local device's own hardware, effectively turning the switch into a mini network monitoring agent. It depends implicitly on basic SNMP polling of arbitrary remote object identifiers (rndMonitoredObjectIdentifier), reusing standard SNMP GET semantics rather than a specific external MIB standard. An administrator would populate rndMonitoredElementsTable with entries specifying rndMonitoredElementAddress, rndMonitoredElementCommunity, and rndMonitoredObjectIdentifier to have the switch itself poll a remote device's OID at rndDefaultPollingInterval. rndMonitoredElementStatus would be checked to see if the monitored element is currently reachable or has failed to respond. rndAlarmEnabling and rndAlarmInterval control whether and how often alarms are raised when a monitored element's status changes, useful for detecting an unreachable upstream device without a full NMS deployment.
