What Is DOCS-RPHY-MIB?

DOCS-RPHY-MIB is a CableLabs standards-based MIB defining management objects for Remote PHY Devices (RPDs), the distributed hardware that separates the MAC and PHY layers of a traditional CMTS in a Remote PHY cable network architecture. It exposes device information and identification data, including system uptime, count of available crash files, vendor name, model number, serial number, and device alias, for each RPD in the field. It is directly useful for monitoring both hardware and software status of remote nodes: tracking sysUpTime reveals unexpected reboots, and the crash-file count flags devices that have generated diagnostic dumps after a fault, while the identification fields confirm exactly which hardware unit is being managed. As a CableLabs specification it is designed to complement the broader DOCSIS MIB family (e.g., DOCS-IF-MIB) used on the CMTS core. It is typically deployed in cable/MSO hybrid fiber-coax (HFC) access networks that have adopted a distributed access architecture with fiber-connected Remote PHY nodes. How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using docsRphyRpdDevL2tpSessionStatsOutOfSeqPkts OID:

Select a DOCSIS Remote PHY Device (RPD), cable HFC access node (vendor-neutral CableLabs standard) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type docsRphyRpdDevL2tpSessionStatsOutOfSeqPkts into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. This attribute indicates the count of session packets that were received out of sequence from the point of view of the reporting entity. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases between polls, since a rising count of errors, failures, or discards often points to a real underlying problem. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
