Description: Defines the IANAPhysicalClass textual convention that provides an indication of the general hardware type of a particular physical entity.
IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring IANA-ENTITY-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.
What Is IANA-ENTITY-MIB?
IANA-ENTITY-MIB is the standard IANA-maintained MIB (RFC 6933 companion) defining a textual convention indicating the general hardware type (chassis, backplane, container, power supply, fan, sensor, module, port, stack, CPU, etc.) of a physical entity reported by ENTITY-MIB. It carries no data objects of its own — as a textual-convention-definition MIB it exists so ENTITY-MIB implementations can classify physical components using standardized type codes. It underlies network devices implementing the standard ENTITY-MIB hardware-inventory framework. Engineers can download the IANA-ENTITY-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in IANA-ENTITY-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Network devices implementing the standard ENTITY-MIB
Monitoring Examples
An NMS interprets an entPhysicalClass-adjacent value against IANA-ENTITY-MIB's standardized hardware-type codes to classify a physical component as, e.g., a fan or power supply.
