Category: Domain: CATV/Cable, Domain: Video/Broadcast

Description: Monitors DVB signal characteristics including signal level, SNR, and BER for digital video broadcast quality.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is DVB-MGSIGNALCHARACTERISTICS-MIB?

This vendor-neutral DVB Measurement Group MIB captures RF and transport-stream signal characteristics to assist in interpreting broadcast quality tests defined by ETSI TR 101 290. It exposes signal-level, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), bit-error-rate (BER), and transport-stream structural information. Its focus is on monitoring the hardware/RF performance of broadcast reception or transmission equipment: degraded SNR or rising BER directly indicates a weakening RF signal or transmission fault that could cause viewer-visible picture problems. It is designed to complement DVB-MGTR101290-MIB and the ETSI TR 101 290 test specification. It is typically deployed at DVB broadcast headends and on dedicated signal-measurement probes in digital TV network operations, where engineers consult a DVB-MGSIGNALCHARACTERISTICS-MIB reference to map raw OIDs back to the ETSI TR 101 290 test parameters they represent.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in DVB-MGSIGNALCHARACTERISTICS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • DVB broadcast measurement probe/headend equipment

Monitoring Examples

No sample objects were supplied for this module, so specific table names cannot be cited with confidence. Conceptually, an engineer would poll signal-level, SNR, and BER objects on a measurement probe to detect a degrading RF signal path before it causes visible transport-stream errors. A steadily rising BER alongside falling SNR would typically indicate a failing amplifier, cable, or antenna alignment issue upstream.

What Can Be Monitored

  • RF signal level
  • signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)
  • bit error rate (BER)
  • transport stream structure parameters
