Category: Domain: CATV/Cable, Standard: DOCSIS

Description: Manages DOCSIS 3.0 cable interface objects including channel bonding and multiple channel configurations.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is DOCS-IF3-MIB?

This is a CableLabs/IETF-derived standards MIB (DOCS-IF3-MIB) that manages DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem interface objects, including channel bonding and multiple downstream/upstream channel configurations used on cable broadband networks. It exposes cable modem (CM) status data covering registration, ranging, and synchronization health as well as configuration for bonded channel groups. This MIB is heavily focused on monitoring hardware/software status of cable modems: it tracks resets, lost synchronizations, invalid MAP/UCD messages, invalid ranging and registration responses, and T1/T2 timer timeouts, all of which are classic indicators of a cable modem struggling to maintain a stable RF link. It builds directly on the base DOCSIS interface MIB framework and IETF/CableLabs DOCSIS specifications. It is typically deployed on cable modem termination systems (CMTS) and cable modems in HFC (hybrid fiber-coax) broadband access networks. Operators relying on the DOCS-IF3-MIB MIB gain visibility not just into individual modem health but into the bonded-channel-group configuration that underpins DOCSIS 3.0's higher throughput.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in DOCS-IF3-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem
  • cable modem termination system (CMTS)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator could poll docsIf3CmStatusTable/docsIf3CmStatusEntry for docsIf3CmStatusValue and docsIf3CmStatusCode to see the modem's registration state, then check docsIf3CmStatusResets, docsIf3CmStatusLostSyncs, and docsIf3CmStatusT1Timeouts to diagnose whether a modem is repeatedly dropping sync due to poor RF signal quality. Rising docsIf3CmStatusInvalidRangingRsps or docsIf3CmStatusInvalidRegRsps counts would point to upstream ranging or registration problems on that line.

What Can Be Monitored

  • cable modem registration status/code
  • modem reset count
  • lost synchronization events
  • invalid MAP/UCD message counts
  • invalid ranging/registration response counts
  • T1/T2 timer timeouts
